Substance abuse results from using substances (alcohol, some prescription medications, or illicit drugs) to cope with emotional problems. Some individuals are biologically predisposed to developing addiction and can develop very significant problems with even limited use of a substance. I have extensive experience working with individuals at all stages of addiction and recovery including substance abuse (and associated emotional and relationship problems), severe addiction requiring intensive treatment, and early and long term recovery (and different, yet often more troubling emotional and relationship problems). My approach to working with this set of problems is similar to my approaches to other problems — get a clear understanding of the underlying issues and develop skills to improve coping and relationships. I am well-versed in and supportive of the 12 Step Model of recovery, but also recognize that this approach does not serve everyone equally well. I can help you develop the skills and supports to achieve and maintain sobriety. For more acute symptoms, especially those that require medical attention, I can refer you to and collaborate with appropriate medical providers. Depending on your struggles, individual and/or family work may be recommended.
In addition, I offer a substance abuse recovery group. This group is for individuals who are looking for structure and support in maintaining sobriety. Group meets once a week and is most appropriate for individuals who have demonstrated ability to achieve at least 3-6 months of abstinence and are looking to address the emotional and relational problems associated with long term recovery from addiction.
